Thalia Raftopoulou (b. 1980) 

I am an artist, researcher and educator based in Athens.

My work moves between fieldwork and the studio, unfolding through small gestures, drawing, sound, video and site-specific installation, both independently and collaboratively. Buildings, stairwells, neighbourhood conversations, radio transmissions, domestic routines quietly insist on being listened with, probing the space between art and the everyday.

I suspect listening is a practice of being repeatedly undone. Rather than taking it as a given, I return to the conditions that make it possible and ask how bodies, voice, vibration, architectures, technologies continually shape one another. I grow long-term artistic inquiries through sustained attention to the ordinary and its oral cultures with persistent focus on noise, orality and the acousmatic experience.

In 2010, I co-founded Rekem Records releasing records in physical format with sound works stemming from practices in sound art, field recording, experimental and electronic and their intersections. In 2021, I completed my PhD, Sound and Listening in the Athenian Apartment Building (Polykatoikia) as Artistic Practice, at the Athens School of Fine Arts. I also hold an MFA in Public Art and New Artistic Strategies from Bauhaus-Universität Weimar (2010) and a BFA in Painting from the Athens School of Fine Arts (2006).

Currently I work as an adjunct lecturer at the Athens School of Fine Arts, teaching the course Art, City, Sound. We explore the artistic practices that emerge with urban sonorities in Athens.
